My Alien Eggplant
"Sometimes the unexpected is so serendipitous :) I planted these eggplants near the end of February. They were about 4 weeks old when they started forming thorns on TOP of the leaves. Not on the stem or calyx as is the norm with eggplant, but right on the leaves! I set out on a google search, but the only eggplant I could find with thorns on the leaves were some round Thai ones which were described as having yellow flowers and quarter sized eggplant. Surely not what I expected from my long Italians! Fast forward 2-3 weeks, and my little aliens started blooming....PURPLE flowers. Lots and lots of purple flowers. Well now I just had to keep them to see what I'd get. My 1st round of eggplants looked like they'd belong to the "little fingers" family. We plucked and enjoyed them! Then those plants just kept producing.....and the next rounds got longer and closer to what I was expecting. I think 6 inches was about the longest, but they are still going strong, and true to their alien nature, they have shed the thorns on their leaves. I don't know if those thorns were a genetic throwback or what, but I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER with the eggplants I'm getting! I made sure to order more of my little aliens!"

"If you like eggplant, you will enjoy this plant. It grows loads of fruits- they are hanging all over, on the ground, just really prolific. I grew six seeds and they all germinated last year and though I enjoy eggplant, I didn't know what to do with all of it. This year, I am only planting two and trying a couple of other eggplant types and plan on finding lots of new recipes to try out this Summer."
